Assistant Editor Gianna Ortner-Findlay eagerly awaits the arrival of the VMAs. “As well as these artists’ accomplishments being highlighted,” said Ortner-Findlay “frontline workers’ work and accomplishments during the pandemic will be put on display during the awards show.” This years VMA’s will be streamed across multiple networks, making this the first time that the awards show will be simulcast.

This year has been full of firsts in the video music industry, as artists have had to adapt to how they create their music videos and record the music itself. This brief distraction from the world’s current events is welcomed, as Keke Palmer, the first woman of color to host the event solo, walks viewers through the greatest music (and corresponding videos) of 2020.

Music Television, or MTV, has been around since 1981 and hosted the first Video Music Awards in 1984. Since then, the event has brought spectacular performances, award-winning artists, and a spectacle to look forward to every year since.

This year’s VMA’s will be no different, as the line up of performers hit all of the points on the talent spectrum. Each artist will be performing in various locations at outdoor stages instead of Brooklyn’s Barclay Center as a coronavirus prevention measure. Each performance will have limited to no audience, as most viewers will be witnessing these events from home.

As always, the pre-show will be showcasing some new talent as Chloe x Halle, Machine Gun Kelly featuring Travis Barker and blackbear, Jack Harlow, Lewis Capaldi and Tate Mcrae, take the stage to introduce the main event.

Main event performers will include Lady Gaga and Ariana, who are planning to perform their Video of the Year nominated hit, “Rain on Me.” Other powerhouse artists like BTS, The Weeknd, Maluma, Roddy Ricch, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, J Balvin, Black Eyed Peas, DABABY, and CNCO.

The VMA nominations list was posted exactly a month before the shows planned live stream date of August 30th, 2020. The categories and nominations list are on MTV.com.

In the lead for nominations are Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga, each with nine nominations, as Billie Eilish and The Weeknd follow up with a respective six nominations each. Taylor Swift rounds out the list with five nominations.

As well as these artists’ accomplishments being highlighted, frontline workers’ work and accomplishments during the pandemic will be put on display during the awards show.

The highly anticipated awards show will be live-streamed on MTV.com or the network’s app. It will also be available on other ViacomCBS networks as the show will be simulcast for the first time. These other networks include BET, CMT, Comedy Central, Paramount Network, TV Land, The CW and more.

Be sure to tune in to the pandemic party of the year on August 30th, for either the pre-show at 5:30 p.m. CT/6:30 ET or the main event, which will be airing at 7:00 p.m. CT/8:00 p.m. ET.
